Spilliaert, double bedroom

Spilliaert is the only room in our main building that has a direct view on the swimming pool. It is equipped with a matrimonial bed (140mx200m), you have ample storage ( a 150 cm wide closet), a cosy corner and a large bathroom (toilet, sink, and a step-in shower).

Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) is considered as a very a-typical Belgian painter. It is nearly impossible to pin him down to one single art movement. He was always in self-doubt, leading to everchanging, wild mood swings. His works often refers to the Ostend seafront. This is not surprising, as he used to spend hours strolling along this scenery, partly due to sleeping problems. His paintings are characterized by bleak colors, due to his use of washed East Indian ink. The “Duizeling” of 1908 is one of his best-known works, alongside a series of self-portraits.

Numerous works can be admired in MU.zee in Ostend (www.muzee.be).

The Spilliaert house (www.hetspilliaerthuis.be) invites people to discover the work of Léon Spilliaert.
